A new season.
The same great yoga experience.
In October 2020, Solstice Yoga Shala took over the space formerly known and loved as Human Breathing Yoga Studio. Ronnie Coughenour built Human Breathing Yoga Studio with heart and soul in order to introduce the practice of yoga to his beloved community. Solstice Yoga Shala hopes to make the transition into this new season with grace, warmth, and respect to the history of Human Breathing Yoga Studio. With this change, you can expect the same great yoga experience, and know that Ronnie will still bring his infectious laugh to the studio as he continues to teach classes in our space!
The biannual Solstice (combining the Latin words "sol" for "sun", and "sistere" meaning "to stand still”) is the point where the sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest point in the sky, thus ancient astronomers came to know the day as one where the 'Sun Stood Still'. Shala is a Sanskrit word meaning, “home", "space", or "abode”. A Yoga Shala is therefore a 'place of yoga'. Solstice Yoga Shala has embraced the traditional meaning of Shala and created an inviting space for yogis to practice, learn, and grow. Whether you feel as though you are at your "highest" or "lowest" point in your journey, like the sun, we welcome you to come shine your light with us.
The mission of Solstice Yoga Shala is to make yoga accessible for our entire community.
We know that yoga can often feel confusing and intimidating to those whom are unfamiliar, and we encourage anyone interested in the practice to try a complimentary class.

Kayla was first exposed to yoga during her high school years and attended a few classes at the original Human Breathing Yoga Studio here in Morgantown, PA. However, it wasn't until knee surgery left her couch bound in college that Kayla leaned on the physical practice of yoga to return to feeling like a strong, able-bodied athlete again.
With a consistent yoga practice, in combination with meditation, Kayla noticed the mental health benefits of the practice and found relief from anxiety. The spiritual and sacred nature of the practice has offered Kayla a sense of grounding, direction, and connection that she strives to share with her students.
Kayla took a deeper dive into the practice when attending a 4-week immersive teacher training in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Shortly after, Kayla spent about a year in Nevada City, California studying Ayurveda and enjoying the Sierra Nevada mountains. Upon moving back to Morgantown, Kayla began teaching at Solstice Yoga Shala (formerly Human Breathing Yoga Studio) and has been so for over 4 years. She has taught at various studios in West Chester, Harrisburg, Mechanicsburg, Camp Hill, and Hershey, PA.
As a Morgantown native, it is full circle for Kayla to become the next leader of Solstice Yoga Shala. Following in the path of original owner Ron and previous owner Cait, it is a great honor to lead this beloved studio and its' loyal community.
Kayla believes that leadership means to bring out the best in others, and that is what she strives to do for our teachers, students, and community.
